Read this first Canonical primitive

Solana TAO is a bridged wrapper. You cannot stake it on a Bittensor subnet from Phantom.

The token at the mint below is real, canonical, and tradeable on Solana. It is not native TAO. Holding it earns no subnet emissions, no validator yield, and no dTAO. To stake, you bridge back to Bittensor — the route out is below.

    [ Operational protocol ]

Buying it, and the thing people get wrong afterwards

    1. Solana wallet

      Fund SOL

You need SOL in a Solana wallet — Phantom, Solflare, Backpack. SOL is the gas and the deepest route in. Keep a little spare: a first-time TAO buy opens a token account, and that account has to be funded to stay rent-exempt.

Token-account rent: ~0.0015 SOL, returned if you close it

    2. Jupiter

Swap, with slippage set by hand

Open the prefilled route, then confirm the output mint matches the address above character for character — aggregator search will happily show you five things called TAO. Read the price-impact line before signing: the book is thin, so a size that is nothing in SOL is a real haircut here.

Depth check: read the impact line, not the spot price

    3. What you hold

      Know what you are holding

A wrapped claim on TAO, tradeable on Solana, kept near the native price by arbitrage. It does not stake, it does not earn emissions, and it will not show up on Taostats.

Subnet emissions on this token: none

If you actually want subnet yield

Then this is probably the wrong thing to buy. The road from a Solana wrapper to a staked position runs through a chokepoint most people never price.

    Getting out

Everybody checks the depth on the way in. The way back to native TAO is the leg nobody prices, and it is not symmetrical with the way in.

One person stands in the door

Bittensor's base chain runs no smart contracts of its own, so the route between Bittensor and Ethereum is the wTAO bridge — a closed-source contract operated by a single pseudonymous developer, holding about $29M of TAO today. Redemption is not permissionless: withdrawals are verified by hand, at a cadence the operator described as "at least once a day morning/night."

That is not an accusation — the bridge works and it holds real money. It is a structure, and you should know it sits between you and your TAO before you assume you can leave on demand.

The closed-source contract, the one-person team and the withdrawal quote were reported by DL News in February 2024, quoting the operator directly; the bridge held $82M then. The $29M figure is today's, from DefiLlama. Wormhole itself does not reach Bittensor — it is not among the ~73 chains in Wormhole's registry.

The path that isn't thisEVM direct

Staking doesn't need the wrapper at all

Bittensor's EVM layer exposes a staking precompile. The V2 interface takes a netuid, so you can stake into a specific subnet from an ordinary EVM transaction — and addStakeLimit carries a limit price and a partial-fill flag, so you are not staking blind into a moving alpha pool.

    addStake(bytes32 hotkey, uint256 amount, uint256 netuid)
    addStakeLimit(bytes32 hotkey, uint256 amount,
      uint256 limit_price, bool allow_partial, uint256 netuid)

LayerZero and Hyperlane both list Solana and Bittensor's EVM. So if the plan is to stake, the move is to route value across and stake there — not to buy a wrapper and try to walk it home.

Signatures copied from Opentensor's evm-bittensor interface, precompile 0x…0805. Confirm it is live on mainnet before you rely on it — and know that Bittensor EVM is close to empty, with about $28K of DeFi across one DEX against $522M on the base chain.
